Germany the voice of coal in Europe

Lignite production, which totalled 166.3 million tonnes (51.4 Mtce) in 2018, was centred in three mining areas, namely the Rhenish mining area around Cologne, Aachen and Mönchengladbach, the Lusatian mining area in south-eastern Brandenburg and north-eastern Saxony, and the Central German mining area in the south-east of Saxony-Anhalt and the north-west of Saxony.
